#493 - German M1871 Mauser

This is a very respectable German M71 Mauser which seems to be an amalgam of two complete rifles in that the barrel, receiver and major bolt components all match (serial 73577) and all of the smaller parts on the rifle match each other (serial 4644) including such items as barrel bands, screws, rear sight leaf and bolt stop nut and washer. The metal is generally gray while the brass trigger guard is an unpolished, very attractive patina. The stock is in overall very good condition with no cracks, however, it does have some initials in the right side of the stock (PC) as well as a faintly visible stamped name (“CEDRESS”). There is also a cut or gash, between the upper band and nosecap, in which someone has done a poor job of trying to fill. The filler is quite soft and would be easily removed to effect a far better repair (see pics). The butt plate itself is pitted and the wood up against the butt plate shows evidence of moisture or water. There is a tiny, inch long, hairline crack at the upper tang. The bore of this rifle is sharp with very crisp lands and groves, relatively bright with only a couple of very small spots of roughness. It functions well and smoothly and I see no reason why it would not provide a great day at the shooting range.
